Randy and Kerry's 2002 Trip to British Columbia

DAY 3: From Reno, NEVADA to Eureka, CALIFORNIA

FRIDAY, 24 May 2002

Ahhh, another KOA Kampground! This one is "in" Eureka, CA - right on the California coast.

So far we've visited a town named Eureka each day on our trip, and each one is in a different state! From the Motel 6 in Reno this morning we went in search of an REI sporting goods store that we found in the phone book. We found a McDonald's first, and had breakfast. Another guy eating there told us how to find the street that the REI store was on. We found it easily enough, but they didn't have any balaclavas. But they did give us directions to the Patagonia outlet store, which happened to be having a Memorial Day sale today. They had 2 Large balaclavas. Randy tried one on, decided to get it, and put the other one back in the bin. A minute or two later I thought I should at least try one on. Ha! I went through the whole bin 2 or 3 times, but someone else must have grabbed it. Oh well - at least we don't have to spend time searching for balaclavas any more!

From the store we made our way back to I-80, back to Hwy 345, and headed for Susanville, CA. The landscape started getting more interesting along the way, and Susanville turned out to be some sort of "gateway" to the mountains. We had a great ride on Hwy 36, and stopped in Chester for gas and an ice cream cone. Then 70 more miles to Red Bluff, and another 10 or 15 up I-5 to the Cottonwood exit. We pulled off and I called Sue's parents. They were home, so we continued in to Lake California to their place for a visit. While we were still outside talking, Devery came home from a day of home schooling. We were both surprised to see each other - I had forgotten that she was staying with Sue's parents. I called and talked to Sue for a little while, and then we said our goodbyes and headed up to Redding and onto Hwy 299, which took us 140+ miles to...Arcata. A large part of the almost 3-hour ride was "twisties"; "canyon carving" if you will. And the last 45 minutes of that was in gathering darkness - a wild & hairy ride. Dinner tonight: chicken rice, green beans, fruit cocktail.

Miles covered today: 403
Total miles covered: 998
