Dad and Kerry's 2003 Trip to British Columbia

Day 0 - The Day Before

WEDNESDAY, 14 August 2003

Ouch! It's 4:00 in the morning [on Thursday] and I'm supposed to get up in a few hours and ride all day. I just finished all of the packing and other preparations that I didn't have to postpone until tomorrow. I'm bushed! I hope Dad doesn't mind if we leave a little late tomorrow - he's been in bed for several hours now. Of course, it's the first time he's slept in a bed since Monday night ... and he had a pretty big day, too.

I did as much as I could at work today, and then left at about 3:30. I would not have been surprised to find Mom & Dad at the house, but they weren't there; they didn't show until almost 4:30. They left Rose Bud at 9:00 in the morning yesterday, drove straight through to Moab (where they stopped for a couple of hours), continued on to Redmond to make a delivery from Barton's wholesale store to the Jensens, and then came on up.

Within a short time Dad had changed a balding front tire on [our] Pontiac, unloaded his Kawasaki Concours, and situated the motorcycle trailer (with the KLR650 still mounted) in the driveway. As he got started on packing up his Concours for our trip he noticed some trails of drips on the street which matched the motion of the van as he had manipulated the trailer. It turned out to be power steering fluid from the van. Ouch! He plans on fixing it after we get back. As it started to get dark, Dad found a problem with the motorcycle. It had to do with a bent luggage rack, and part of the rear brake assembly gouging a hole into the right-side saddlebag. He ended up using my Dremel tool to shave off part of the protruding piece, because he didn't dare try to bend the cast aluminum rack back into shape.

Once Dad had done all the packing he could do, he went to bed. That's about the time that I really got underway! I collected, rearranged, packed, unpacked, lightened some items and so on for hours. I also put another layer of waterproofing on my boots, took Sue to the grocery store, and offloaded some more pictures from my camera. I can't believe I got all of those piles into my various pieces of luggage. Of course, I still need to get it all on the bike tomorrow. And I have some water and frozen drinks to stuff in somewhere. I also have to arrange for insurance for the Pontiac after all, and get youth speakers for Sunday, and call about my Capital One Visa, and....
